What students say about The University of British Columbia

Likes

  • The engineering course at UBC is great and provides you with many opportunities throughout the year.
  • There are no on-campus placements at UBC, but opting for co-op is a very good option as it allows companies to absorb you by the time of graduation.
  • I received the Trek Excellence Scholarship for Continuing Students, which is a $4,000 award for students who are in the top 5% of their year and program (such as Arts or Science).
  • Probably smaller than the 100-hectare campus of Stanford, but 1,000 acres in the middle of the city of Vancouver with great connectivity and amazing infrastructure, the campus will impress, no doubt.
  • On-campus housing is excellent and hospitable. Honestly, it feels crucial to have the experience.
  • They charged us for the infrastructure of UBC, healthcare plans, and also a great sum for the gym (although we still have to pay another fee on top of that to use the gym).
  • I know for a fact that they are perfect in supporting and taking and dropping classes.
  • One of the best business schools in North America specializes in undergraduate programs, concentration subjects, location, faculty, and networking opportunities.

Dislike

  • While there is some business trips and research experience, it is not as much as it should be

The university provides a combination of well curated academic curriculum and lots of opportunities for extracurriculars as well. The infrastructure is at par with the high ranked universities.

  • There is nothing I dislike about UBC. I can say that the campus is so huge that you need more time than a year to explore it. UBC has so and fun activities and events that it makes it really hard to utilize and attend all of them in that one year along with your studies and part-time.

The course duration was really good, however, there is no on-campus placement. The faculty and academics are commendable and overall my experience with UBC has been memorable. It was a great opportunity to study with such a good faculty and get so much exposure. To conclude, I would say to study abroad the first research should be done about the country you want to move to, does it has job opportunities or not then you need to hunt the college or university. Getting into UBC was a great thing however the moment I would get a job in my legal field then I would be on cloud nine.

Fees:

So I paid the entire tuition fee in 2022 and it was around 1247 per credit, it is a 30 credits course, so I paid about 37000 CAD however, at the end of my course I was asked to pay 2100 CAD more as every year in May UBC increases its fee. So, the courses I took in my last semester in 2023 were charged as per the revised rate so there was a difference of 2100 CAD, which I paid recently.

  • Dislikes:
  • Firstly, the lack of vibrant events and social events on campus has left me yearning for a more engaging atmosphere that fosters student connections and memorable experiences.,
  • Secondly, it is disheartening to see some professors receiving consistently poor reviews from students yet remaining in their positions without any discernible improvement. This raises concerns about the university's commitment to maintaining a high standard of teaching and ensuring student satisfaction.,
  • Additionally, the inadequacy of transit facilities poses a significant inconvenience for students, making commuting to and from the campus a challenging aspect of university life.,
  • Lastly, in today's rapidly evolving business landscape, it is crucial for universities to offer a diverse range of courses that are relevant and up-to-date. The absence of new business-related courses that address the latest industry trends and challenges leaves students feeling ill-prepared for the real world upon graduation.

My overall experience is okay. I am not very happy with the studies and curriculum as well as the campus life but i still got to learn a lot of things which I wouldn't have if I was to be still in India,

It was an amazing experience, especially since it was completely different from how the education scene is in India. You are responsible for yourself and your career. Seniors and mentors can only guide you, but you will be the one steering. There is a diversity in the professors as there is in the students. The campus is huge and beautiful.

As I said the campus impresses, I felt the climate suits me much more than the rest of the top universities in Canada, and being part of such a great school has resonated with many when I mention being a student there.

It was a last minute thing. I didn't have a choice. It was in water management and a one year course. It was good for the friends I made. It is good if you are looking for PR. It is not good if you are looking to improve knowledge or get a job as soon as you are done with your course.

Fees:

It was around 54000 CAD for tuition fees paid in three terms. I think it might be increased this year. Totally not worth it.

  • Dislikes:
  • Due to its distance from the city, the campus was somewhat inconvenient when we wanted to travel outside. It is also very difficult for students who live off campus to travel to college because the college is practically on the outskirts of Vancouver, making the journey to and from college quite difficult.

University of British Columbia had a very good ranking for engineering. Also, compared to other colleges, the admission process was very straightforward and hence easier to complete. As for the program, UBC had an amazing soil engineering department with amazing faculty. I had a memorable time at UBC, although it had to be cut short due to COVID-19. There was a lot of opportunities presented by UBC, most of which I did not take advantage of.

Campus Life:

There is always something happening at the campus, may it be sports, events, or club activities. Hence the campus was always lively.

I have heard a lot about the University. Their representatives have visited us many times. UBC also offers a "testing" online learning session where students would get to be a part of the program for several sessions. This has allowed me to fully experience how my class would feel like if I were an official UBC student. UBC also offers many clubs activities and are especially good in helping students find jobs and internships.

Ques. How can I get scholarships or financial aid for the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto?

● Top Answer By Marium Tariq on 11 Jan 21

Ans. It depends from where you are, as well as your previous background. If you are not a Canadian, you will only be eligible for some scholarships and not financial aid . Even then the competition will be too much and you’ll have to be too good with a unique background so that you become a prospective student with a lot of potential at UBC. There are different scholarships for different programs. All have varying criteria which you need to go through carefully. Female students in hard sciences have an added benefit in many scholarships specifically aimed to help them. Parameters Funding at University of British Columbia Funding at University of Toronto Total Funding Budget 30 Million CAD 247 Million CAD Average Scholarship Amount Merit-based: 25-30% Need-based: 65-70% 7,500 CAD to 20,000 CAD Official Website UBC scholarships UToronto’s website UBC Offers funds based on your academic and extracurriculars. You’d be automatically considered for any merit-based awards once admitted to UBC for up to 25-30% of total offered funding. UBC Need-based awards comprise 65-70% of total funding and depends on the student's financial need. UBC Hybrid scholarships are awarded based on a combination of merit (academics, leadership skills, etc.) and student’s financial requirements. These make up 10% of the UBC funding. University of Toronto University of Toronto’s budget for funding in 2019-2020 was 247M CAD If you're a great student with active extracurricular participation, you can be considered for scholarships ranging from 7,500 CAD to 20,000 CAD You can check out UToronto’s website for specifics. Credible academic references, exceptional marks and great personal achievements and records are a must for availing most of these merit-based scholarships. These merit-based scholarships/awards don't require any application as you’d be automatically considered. Finally, make sure you work hard and apply on time to be considered for these.Read more

work study options in the university of british columbia

Educational experience at University British Columbia is much more than just obtaining a UBC undergraduate or graduate program degree. It is also about gaining developing employable skills, building a network, and gaining professional experience. All this can be done with UBC work study programs, available for both domestic and international students.

University of British Columbia’s work study program offers five components to aid a student’s personal growth:

  • Personal and professional development
  • Learning workplace skills and etiquette
  • Exploring potential career options
  • Experimental academic learning
  • Ongoing mentorship

As you must be aware international students, on Canadian student visa, are required to adhere to certain regulations while opting to work part-time (or work study) during their studies, not just at UBC but any Canadian university. Students may even require a work permit.

Like in any other university, international students at UBC can choose to work on-campus or off-campus.

On-Campus Work Study Options at UBC

UBC on-campus work study opportunities include university-related work such as working at facilities like clinics, research institutes, teaching, etc.

Apart from this, students may choose to work with:

  • UBC student organization
  • Private contractor operating within UBC campus boundaries.

For these on-campus employment options, international students do not require any work permit. However, if their on-campus work is an internship or co-op program, then they may need the Canadian work permit.

Off-Campus Work Study Options at UBC

Off-campus work options include volunteering and internship opportunities. UBC students enrolled in any program, do not require a work permit for off-campus work as well, as long as you maintain your full-time student status.

While it is your choice to go for on-campus or off-campus work options, international students are highly recommended to seek on-campus employment. This is because UBC on-campus jobs do not have any restrictions in terms of the number of working hours. However, students working off-campus can only work for 20 hours per week. Therefore, decide your UBC working while studying options wisely.
