A few of my friends were Institute toppers and I asked them about their study method. Most of my topper friends study just 2 days before exams in the library and then teach their friends and clear their doubts. Another topper friend solved all the previous year question papers of the subject and uploads the solutions on the Facebook group a day before the exam. She never missed any class, had great handwriting and prepared great notes. So basically, toppers , prepare for the exams way before most of us even begin. They are kind, selfless and are ready to help anyone who is unable to cope up. Ultimately, every student has his unique way of studying.

How easy is it to change branch in IIT Kharagpur?

My cousin had got a branch change from Mechanical engineering to Electronics engineering (ECE). He shared his experience with me of how easy it was to get a branch change. The primary and most important thing is to be regular and give equal attention to all subjects. You have to focus on your studies only and not let any distractions take the better of you. Be firm on your goal and give up all time-wasting activities. You need to be rightly motivated and determined to achieve these goals. Not losing hope is the key as one or two exams do not define you. You will get ample opportunities to prove yourself so just keep working hard. My cousin scored below average in the middle of the 2nd semester. However, she got this sudden motivation and studied hard and was able to score an overall CGPA of 9.64. She studied consistently every day and was able to change her branch eventually.

Why is IIT Kharagpur Electrical Engineering department so deadly? How do they differ from others' IIT Electrical Department?

My brother had offers from IITs to choose any branch except CSE and chose Electrical Engineering in IIT KGP. To date, he does not regret his decision. There are ups and downs in every Institute; it just takes time to adapt yourself to such situations. It is true that some professors overdo it and push you to the extreme, but if you look at this in a positive manner, it’s their pushing that eventually helps you succeed. There are many seniors who might make fun of your tiny efforts in the labs but trust me, today when they will look back, they will surely be regretting the time they wasted watching movies or series. My brother told me that Electrical Engineering gave him so many friends and experiences that make him yearn for college life today. The labs are old-fashioned and lack much activity in contrast to a SigNet lab/ Power Systems lab. Curriculum: The primary aim of the course curriculum offered in Electrical Engineering at IIT KGP is to impart to students tools and skills that will make it possible for them to excel in departments such as Electronics, Communication, Computers, Aerospace, and Energy. Job prospects: An important point to note is that Electrical Engineering does not prepare you for a job but for higher education in the respective areas. Many people from the department pursue M.S. in Aerospace and Material Sciences. Faculty: While many may not agree, the faculty is excellent except for a few. The cream faculty include Prof. D Das, Prof TKB, Prof S Patra, and Prof S Chattopadhyay among others. Interacting with them might change your opinion regarding the IIT KGP faculty. Research: The research is obviously not at par with that conducted in CS or EC, but it surely does justice to the department itself. I think it’s high time people clear misconceptions about Electrical Engineering and develop a positive opinion about it. We should stop running after jobs and companies and in turn let companies seek us.

What advice would you give to a fresher at IIT Kharagpur?

Every person will have a different opinion on what advice work best for freshers. Instead of giving you a list of things to follow, I will suggest you just focus on 3 key points Maintain your academics: The primary focus should be your academics and staying at the top of your class. Don’t let your CGP fall below 8 throughout your life at KGP. Learn new things: This does not include just DC++, Counter-Strike, or FIFA. Explore new things such as workshops, society interviews, and sports, or take part in different inter-halls. Make friends: Surviving in an IIT can be much easier with the right set of friends. To interact with your hostel buddies and make new friends that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Overall, you need a highly positive mindset before joining IIT. You need to be passionate about things and be ready to work hard and achieve them.

I am a first year student of IIT Kharagpur. I am not in any society. I have a bad CGPA. Is there anything I can do?

This is a common problem among freshers at IIT Kharagpur. Their CGPA is initially very low and they fail to become a part of any society. While this certainly is a crucial issue, it can be addressed so you don’t have to worry too much and demotivate yourself. Here are 3 simple ways to overcome this problem Academics: Before anything comes academics. So the first thing you should do to come out of such an issue is to improve your CGPA. This isn’t that difficult since one can easily score well by just studying 1-2 weeks prior to exams in IITs. Attend all classes and find the subject that is your strength and work on it. Focus on skills not resume: Shift the focus from building a sound resume to inculcating sound skills. For instance, the dramatics society will add to your speaking skills and confidence. The same can be achieved by just interacting more with people and attending inter-halls. One does not have to build their resume but their skill only. Hosting your department festival will provide you with managerial skills. So work on such activities and don’t run after societies. Take things lightly: Like Steve Jobs once said, “The best resumes never change the world.”, he literally proved it. Neither did he have a good GPA nor was he part of a good society, yet today he is among the richest and most successful people on Earth. Not being a part of society can be taken positively. One has a lot of free time on his hands and can invest the same in interesting things and learn new things. So the key is to work on your academics, develop skills and take it easy.

How good is IIT KGP MBA?

One can judge the worth and credibility of a Brand, Affiliation, Faculty, Return on investment, Infrastructure, Industry Linkage, Location, and Placements. I have done the same through my answer and hope that it clears away all your doubts regarding IIT KGP MBA. Brand: The IIT tag is more than enough to make any course pursued worthy and credible. Faculty: IIT Kharagpur's faculty pool is known to have the best professors, especially in Operations and Finance courses. Pedagogy: The teaching methodology adopted to impart the course content is a case-based approach that ensures a better understanding of real-life business problems. ROI: IIT KGP MBA fees are around 9 Lakhs and are lesser in comparison to top B Schools. Therefore the ROI is also higher. Infrastructure: IIT Kharagpur boasts top-notch infrastructure, with excellent amenities like sports facilities, a gymnasium, a big library, and a huge campus. Industry relevance: Most professors conduct research/ consulting work for corporations, so you can get their help during live projects or Internship hunting. Guest visits: IIT KGP witnesses a number of guest lectures and corporate meets and the college has managed to invite guest faculties and industry experts on campus. Location: IIT Kharagpur has a very poor location and thus many top recruiters do not visit the campus despite it being an IIT. I wouldn’t say that securing an above 9.0 CGPA at IIT Kharagpur is very tough. With the right motivation, even an average student can get a 9+ CGPA. When it comes to grading, IIT KGP has two methods Relative Grading: Under this, professors are required to give a 9+ CGPA to 25% of the batch which comprises roughly 100 students. Now it’s up to the professor to decide who is worthy of such high grades. While some professors give a 10 CGPA to only the deserving students, many professors casually grade the students without much thought. Absolute Grading: This is a rather rigid grading system wherein grading is done on the basis of cumulative marks. Students scoring 90–100 get a 10 while those 80–90 get a 9 and so on. The upper and lower limits are not fixed and the cutoff is decided by the professor itself. This grading system is usually followed in the Maths Department. So we can conclude that getting a 9+ CGPA becomes a lot easier if you have no other distractions such as research or social work and you have been attending classes regularly. Lastly, I would like to say that CGPA is not the only deciding factor. There are many students with a decent CGPA of 8+ who have made decent accomplishments and done high-level research or wonders in startups. The main agenda is to gain maximum exposure and then plan your future.

IIT Kharagpur has adopted a notional factor of 10 for CGPA to Percent conversion. Our admission process is through JEE Advanced. If you qualify the exam and clear the cut off of every subject separately, then based on your rank, you will get the college and department. I got reservation for being a women. I have no issue with the admission process.

I like campus. Very green and full of trees plants.
And offcourse the fest in my college are amazing.

Dislikes

I think there should be a big city near college.
It's very far from my home. I have to travel 2000km.

For the course you should complete 12th science with mathematics. Then appear for jee mains and jee advanced. After that if you get good rank for IIT you will get it. For that there is a very long process which is in a good way process.

Curriculum of my course is very good. But I personally don't want to do this course but I have to do it. But it's very nice course. Exams are very taken frequently. Like mid sem exams then tests and lab test also.

I liked the culture here at IIT KHARAGPUR
Mentorship is very good here with mentors from society, hall and depts.

Professors may be inconsiderate at times
Weather is not very good especially in summers

JEE MAINS and JEE ADVANCED JEE MAINS AND JEE advanced websites Reservation not availed Difficulty is good but consistent preparation helps. Mains is held four times a year while JEE ADVANCED is held once a year.

Curriculum is very detailed here since ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Department is one of the oldest here at IIT Kharagpur in India. Exams are quite difficult but department is very good if you are targetting core placements. Exams are held twice a semester.

Exploring College

Campus life is very vibrant. I learned many things here.
In my department there is not much load od attendance.

Infrastructure is very old here. Buildings are built in 20th century (starting from 1951)
Basic facilities like water, food is not up to the mark.

Admission process mainly involves two entrance exams, JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. But for admission in IITs, your rank secured in JEE Advanced is considered. After the JEE Advanced Results, JOSAA is responsible for further process required for College Admission process. College selection and Course selection depends on your rank in exam and also Course preference list given by you in JOSAA Portal. Cut-off varies for different courses and different IITs and the information related to cut-off is public and can be seen in JOSAA website.

All of us know that Electronics and Communication both are very important field of Research in today's world. Curriculum wise the course is good, it covers basic electronics in start and then Analog ans Digital Electronics. Semiconductor Device Physics is also included in the course. Signal Processing, a important aspect of Communication is also covered in our course curriculum. In curriculum the theoretical aspect is covered rigorously but there is some lack in practical based learning. But overall the course is very good when compared with other colleges in India. In a particular course, we have some quizzes and/or assignments for regular evaluation & we have Mid-Semester and End- Semester Examinations which covers the major part of evaluation.

We have benefit with reservation , we choose option through JOSAA and after 6 rounds we get to fix our college. Approximately 2 lakh students writes the exam and 12K members gets in to IIT s . It could be better if we have different options also

We have good curriculum which is perfectly scheduled and we have all aspects of involvement. we are equipped with good labs and we have projects which help to develop our challenge facing ability to the real world problems . Our projects are designed in a way where we have to apply knowledge of our learning. Our assesment is done based on mid sem and end sem our exam level is moderate and we can crack exam if we study and go to the classes

IIT Kharagpur - Dream Of JEE Aspirant

I liked the campus very much it has a lot of greenery.
The infrastructure is very good. The facilities offered are vast and top notch.

The course content is a bit outdated and more focused on theory.
I did not like the food in the mess. The quality of the food is average.

The admission process was from JEE Advanced. The application process was online and application fee was 1000rs and the admission process was through josaa portal. The exam is a yearly exam and it is the second most challenging exam in the world.

The course curriculum is good but mainly focused on theory. The curriculum is a bit outdated and in some branches it is less focused on real world applications. The course content can be improved. Exams are very frequent happening every 1.5 months.

To get in to IIT , We need to clear jee advanced , approximately 2 lakh people appear for exam and 12 k students join iit , Admission process goes through JOSAA , we have six rounds in JOSAA then we join the respective college .Exam difficulty level increases by every year . Regarding reservation we have qualify respective cutoff for their category and subject cutoff to qualify

Course Curriculum is diverse in iit Kharagpur, we have multi-disciplinary and we do have labs and projects where we can get basic knowledge to par the real world application, we have perfect schedule and credits to learn the knowledge in the subjects and we have Co curricular or extra curricular to improve all round development .

As per the analysis of the previous year's cutoff, you may not get the IIT Kharagpur with the 300 scores, however, you can get admission into the DTU(Information system, Geoinformatics, etc.), IIT Ropra(Chemical Engineering), IIT Jodhpur(Research), IISc(instrumentation). Candidates applying for the IIT Kharagpur MTech program must appear for the GATE examination followed by COAP counselling. Candidates acquiring the set cutoff scores will be eligible to participate in the counseling session. Once the candidate gets into IIT Kharagpur through counseling, the institute then conducts interview rounds for the final selections. Weightage in the IIT Kharagpur MTech selection process is 70% (GATE score) and 30% (Interview) round.
